#unityindiversity

First in Asia & Latin America
Hong Kong, 3-11 November 2023

Gay Games have never been held in Asia, the world’s largest continent and home to an estimated 221 million LGBTQ+ people. But Asia is also a region where there is an on-going struggle to overcome homophobia and acceptance.

We believe that hosting the Games for the very first time here will be a momentous experience and a cornerstone for our Asian community as well as for the whole world. GGHK can bring all of us together in the name of Sport, Fairness, Respect and Friendship.

GGHK stands for Unity In Diversity and everyone aged 18/+ is welcome to participate regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, or even training level: Games for All.

Curatorial statement

Awakenings. Being LGBTQIA+ is an awakening moment in life; through that, we realize who we are and intuit our desire. While artmaking provides a safer and creative space for artists to materialize the calling of being in our studios, exhibiting artworks by LGBTQIA+ artists in the public context may also awaken audience so as to reflect on their own circumstances.

Presented by Gay Games Hong Kong 2023, LOVE+: Awakenings invites 23 Hong Kong-born and/or-based self-identified queer artists and includes their artworks, at best unseen previously in the public eye, based on the curatorial keyword ‘awakenings’: be they a moment to define their identities, a momentum of their artistic career, of love, desire and care, or an expression to activate, incite and revive. LOVE+: Awakenings also makes a humble attempt delineates a timeline of queer art and its development in Hong Kong as a subtext from the 1990s to date. The exhibits you have been walking through and experiencing include a variety of artistic medium such as drawing and painting, collage, Chinese arts, sculpture, photography and video, socially-engaged art, graphic design, live art and performance, and etc. Arts for all; only the sky is the limit!

We are very fortunate to be able to collaborate with community partners, including Hong Kong AIDS Foundation and the Centre for Innovative Service-Learning, Hong Kong Baptist University. The Hong Kong AIDS Foundation kindly shares four of the AIDS panels made in Hong Kong and by Hong Kong’s AIDS activists. AIDS quilts, or AIDS panels, are commonly known as memorial labour of love to celebrate the lives of people who have died of AIDS-related causes. The Centre for Innovative Service-Learning at HKBU, through the donation of Institute of Creativity and Tin Ka Ping Foundation, provides supports on curatorial programme and undergraduate docent training. We are also grateful to Para Site and WMA of their equipment supports.

LOVE+: Awakenings is only a beginning of the Art & Culture outreach of Gay Games Hong Kong 2023 and its contribution and engagement to queer art, culture and communities in Hong Kong. Concurrently, a historic photography exhibition titled ‘Beyond Strength: A Retrospective Exhibition of Gay Games 1982-2022’ is hosted at Goethe Institut Hongkong on the 14/F of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. The two exhibitions share the past and present of arts, culture and sportsmanship by queer. Gay Games Hong Kong 2023 is scheduled on November 3-11, 2023. The future is not unknown: by knowing and believing how exciting and amicable it will be!

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) endeavours to further develop service-learning and provide at least one opportunity for every willing student to participate by 2023. To realise this plan, the University established the Centre for Innovative Service-Learning (CISL) in 2017 to connect academic departments to community partners, facilitate the formation of interdisciplinary teams and provide appropriate training and support for students and staff. CISL is committed to supporting the development of academic service-learning opportunities that meet community needs and foster social changes. Through service-learning, HKBU endeavours to deliver the best student experience to enhance whole-person development, promote civic engagement and instil in students a sense of purpose.

The docent training programme at LOVE+: Awakenings exhibition is supported by the Institute of Creativity and sponsored by Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation. This programme aims to train the participating students of the Academy of Visual Arts of HKBU, to apply their acquired artistic knowledge and awareness of social identities to the conduction of this exhibition’s guided tours. These student docents will guide the general audience to grasp the highlight of the artworks and get inspired.

LOVE+: Awakenings
