Moving/By Not Moving was a work I did in the US in 2004 when I had panic disorder and was in a transitional stage, away from home in Hong Kong. A personal diary video. This work explores the notion of moving, or not moving, regarding relation(s) of the domestic video camera and myself in an absolutely odd spatial and geographical orientation in California.
《佇著良久…… 》是2004 年在美國創作的錄像日記,當時我患有驚恐症,身處外地,正在經歷一個過渡階段。這個作品探討了移動或不移動的概念:關於家用攝像機和我在加洲奇怪的空間和地理性質的關係,以及對跨國移居的重新思考。
It was one of the early video experiments of the artist after she graduated from film school. Structured in 4 parts – 1. exploring the notion of appropriation regarding the super interesting impersonated gender ambiguity in traditional Cantonese Opera in Hong Kong, 2. dance video in the unique cityscape in the rocky road in Central, 3. interview of a lesbian in Hong Kong, 4. a direct response of a friend in the field of social work of these 3 parts - I showed here the work, and recorded her comments as the last part of the work to inscribe the form of reflexive documentary. This work explores representation and subjectivity of femininity in the early 1990’s in Hong Kong when there was only gay-oriented groups around, and female queer was very invisible. It was one of the earliest works from Hong Kong joining international lesbian and gay film festivals.
這是麥海珊在電影學院畢業之後,最初實驗錄像的幾個作品之一。分為四個部分:1.中環石板街獨特城市景觀中的舞蹈錄像,探索中性與兒時回憶;2. 挪用香港傳統粵劇中有趣的性別扮演和模糊性;3. 採訪香港女同性戀者;4.一個在社會工作領域的朋友對以上三個部分的的直接回應,我向他展示了作品,並將她的評論記錄作為紀錄片最後的部分,重中實驗反省式記錄片 (reflexive documentary)的方法。作品探討了 1990 年代初期香港女性特質和主體性怎樣被呈現,當時只有男同性戀群體為主導的年代,女性酷兒非常隱蔽。這個作品也是最早參加國際同志電影節的香港作品之一。
Anson Hoi Shan Mak is a lens-based media and sound artist. Besides single-channel film/video, she also does phonography sound art, sound installations and web-based projects including the most recent one: Mindfulness, Everyday-life, Art (2022) https://mindfulnessart.hk/zh-Hant. She is especially interested in the form of essay film and experimental ethnography. In addition, she likes to explore the novelty of the medium of Super 8 film in the digital era. Her works are collected in M+ Museum Hong Kong, and were shown in many international film festivals and exhibitions: Yamagata International Documentary Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, etc.
麥海珊是鏡頭媒體及聲音藝術家。除了活動影像,也創作攝影、聲音藝術及網路項目,2022最新作品「正念.日常.藝術」https://mindfulnessart.hk/zh-Hant。這廿年她鑽研散文電影和實驗民族誌,也特別鍾情超八菲林。她的作品被M+博物館收藏, 作品曾參加多個國際展覽和影展,包括山形國際紀錄片影展、 韓國釜山國際電影節、溫哥華國際電影節、洛杉磯亞太影展、台北金馬影展、香港國際電影節等。
