Queering Code is written in Bash, which is a command line interface and a scripting language developed in 1989 as a piece of free software for Unix Systems (Linux and Mac OS but it has been also ported to Windows). The bash script is a plain text file that contains a series of commands for computer execution. Queering Code is both a work of “software art” (software as artwork, not software to make an artwork) and a “codework” (where the source code and critical writing operate together) produced to embody ""queer code” as a form of code poetry. The piece explores the material and linguistic tensions of writing, reading and printing computer code.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Winnie Soon's practice and research intersects with art and technology in the context of Computational Cultures, engaging with topics like queer code and coding otherwise, digital censorship, experimental diagramming and software publishing to understand the potential and implications of technology in a wider cultural and societal context. They are the co-initiator of the art community Code & Share [ ], which brings code, diversity and art together. Since 2022, Soon is the co-editor of the Software Studies Book Series (MIT Press), focusing on software as a site of societal and technical power.
Winnie Soon has given keynotes, public talks, workshops as well as published and exhibited their works internationally at museums, galleries, art/science festivals, libraries, universities, conferences and distributed networks.
