Statement

American poet Carl Phillips has once said that manipulating the syntax of a poetic line is a way to "seduce the readers." In "On Insertion," Wong illustrates same-sex seduction through textured images together with his type-written poem of the same title. The last lines of the poem go, "Tell me/ how often I'm wanted/... between "in love" & "in/ addition to this love." The linguistic insertion between "in" and "love" hints at something both additional and conditional, which shifts the tone of the poem from confident to masochistic, erotic to sorrowful.
